A Message from the CEO

Shaping A Culture That Reinforces Our Corporate Values
A Message from Mr Liu – Chairman and CEO

Ask 50 people for a quick definition of "corporate culture," and you’re likely to get 50 different answers. That’s because culture isn’t something that we can touch, pick up and examine. It’s just there.

Or is it?

In reality, an organization’s culture does not arise spontaneously or maintain itself automatically. It is the product of attitudes and behaviors that are very much within our capacity to shape and control.

Think about the many changes that have taken place since the modern Lockheed Martin was formed in 1995. We have unified business systems, standardized policies and procedures, and built avenues for cross-company collaboration - all in the interest of becoming one company, one team and capturing the full value of this remarkable organization.

In each phase of our maturation as a corporation, we have set goals, developed strategies and assigned resources, just as we do on all of our customer programs. And that’s the same approach we are now taking as we focus on establishing and reinforcing a common culture that permeates every corner of our organization.

A strong, unifying culture is imperative for many reasons. For one, it increases our customers’ confidence that they will encounter the same standards of excellence in every Lockheed Martin business. For another, it improves our agility in responding to opportunities that require teaming across business lines. It also allows our people to move easily throughout the Corporation into jobs where their skills are most needed.

Perhaps most importantly, it gives our employees a clear understanding of what’s required for them to succeed, so that every Lockheed Martin teammate can contribute to his or her full potential. In an industry where competition for talent is intense, a work environment that’s centered on integrity, respect and opportunity is a powerful tool for attracting and retaining top-quality people, at all stages of their careers.
As you will read in this special report, we are building this cultural environment through an unwavering commitment to ethics, diversity, leadership, employee safety and environmental responsibility.

These are not new focus areas for us. We have long regarded every one of them as being fundamental to our corporate values of Do What’s Right, Respect Others, and Perform With Excellence. What is new is our emphasis on a coordinated approach that ensures every element of our culture complements and strengthens the others.

I encourage you to expect the best from your colleagues, your company and yourself; to express your concerns when you experience anything less; and to share your ideas for how we can continue to improve. In the end, our success in shaping the Lockheed Martin culture is in your hands.

Take leadership, for example. Over the past three years, we have introduced Full Spectrum Leadership to define the qualities that Lockheed Martin seeks in leaders and to apply those standards when we hire, promote and evaluate our leaders at all levels, in all of our businesses.

Effective leadership at Lockheed Martin isn’t only about getting results. It’s about getting results in the right way. Our leaders are expected to continually promote ethical behavior, support diversity and make decisions that protect the health and safety of employees as well as the natural environment.

Ultimately, every one of us is a leader, because we all control the attitudes and behaviors of at least one person - ourself - and we set an example for our colleagues. Lockheed Martin is striving to establish the tools and reinforce the values that provide everyone with rewarding work in a safe and supportive environment. But it’s up to each one of us as individuals to embrace the culture we’re creating.
